MONTROSE BEACH: Guidelines

The Basic 4 point plan will remain in effect on a TEST or EVOLVING Basis as we go forward into the summer.

Summary of the 4 Point Plan:

1. Only PASA or IKO Level II (Intermediate) Certified Kiteboarders will be allowed to kite at Montrose
Beach. This prohibits teaching kiteboarding or flying "traction" kites with students on Montrose Beach.

2. All Kiteboarders will follow generally accepted Kiteboarding Safety Practices and use attached Kite Safety Leashes. (No grab handles) 100 Foot Safety Zone from Occupied Beaches, Piers, and other Facilities while riding.

3. Kiteboarding allowed when bathing areas are closed to swimmers due to high wave conditions. Beach then transitions to a shared use for windsports and kayaking. SHARED.

4. Kiteboarding may be allowed by the Captain of the Guards at other times. Early morning, poor weather, etc.

Changes to our Kiteboarding Procedures:

A. All Ceritified Kiteboarders using Montrose will have to have a signed Waiver on file with the Park District. Waivers will be available before Memorial Day and some will be available at the Lifeguard shack for certified visitors.

B. We have moved our operation to the DOG BEACH end of the beach! Thats right, a grass rigging area, walk to your car. No more conflict with the Sailboats, Kayaks, or Vollyball Nets. Note:This area has more pedestrian traffic than we are used to, please launch and get WAY out.  Please respect and avoid the Dog Beach.

C. CheckIn / CheckOut will be required at the Lifeguard Shack. Bring your card, they will match it to a photocopy they have on file already. When you finish kiteboarding, you must retrieve your card. We may have some sort of a "Waiver Signed" and "Montrose Approved" stamp for your card.

D. The City has requested that we suggest a procedure to allow out of town visitors access as well. They are concerned that simple certification isn't enough. Suggestions?

E. 64th St. Beach. Closed to Kiteboarding.

F. E-Coli Days. For now the beach remains closed on E-coli days.  We may have a solution to this soon.

G. Rogue Kiteboarders will not be tolerated by the City. The City will tighten up enforcement of the Kiteban at other beaches.  You can expect the other CPD ( Chicago Police Dept.) to write you a ticket if you are kiteboarding anyplace other than Montrose.

H. IKO Certified Kiteboarders and PASA Kiteboarders that I didn't Certify: I need a photocopy of your certification cards ASAP.

I. Rule #4  It will be the Kiteboarders responsibility to be aware of the Lifeguards signaling them to return to shore and land. If you push the limits and try to stay out, #4 will be cancelled.
